It Just Keeps Getting Worse

2012 is 5 days old.  And three Peace Officers have been killed in the line of duty so far.  What is wrong with us?

And now an officer from the Ogden UT force has been gunned down.

In 2011, 164 officers were killed in the line of duty.

When DH was working he was an Ohio Certified Peace Officer.  That means he had police powers in all state and local law enforcement operations.  He could have been called in on a federal case under the mutual agreements that exist between agencies.

He wore a loaded side arm to work every single day, whether he was patrolling from the vehicle, on foot, on horseback, or if he was doing more mundane tasks like mowing or re-building a bridge.  He had to certify at the firing range 4 times each year, which he did with flying colors.  (Only one other person in Lucas County scored higher at the range and he was also a ranger.)

One of my dearest friends once said to me, "Well, it's not like he was a real cop."

What part of real gun, with real bullets made him "not a real cop?"

  1. Don't get me started. My ex husband was a fire fighter; my now husband a cop. I won't even say what I sure wish I could say. Let's just put it this way...one profession gets all the glory for getting paid to work every once in a while (usually plays video games on duty..or sleeps) to {most often} save stuff(rarely people); the other has to work his tail off the entire time he's on duty and is hated by everyone...yet he works to save PEOPLE more than things.

I better just leave this as an anonymous comment.

  2. It's a dangerous world out there. I have no desire to carry a gun. And those that do have my total respect.

  3. Plus the other 5 that were injured as well today in the Ogden incident... I'll keep them all in my prayers. Working in Law Enforcement myself (although I am relatively safe & not on the road), I've had this conversation many a time. I'll keep most of my comments to myself. But I will say God Bless these men & women who sacrifice to protect us, regardless of what area of Law Enforcement they are in. It is a sad, sad day knowing that this is becoming so much more common. 2012 isn't shaping up much better that 2011 in that respect!
